Join us Sunday, May 3rd for An Exploration of the Traditional String Instruments and Vocal Traditions of the Portuguese Madeira Island.

Professor Roberto Moniz, teaches traditional music and is an expert in chordophone instruments, the family of stringed instruments that including the “machete” (the precursor to the ukulele), which was carried with the Madeirans brought to the Hawaiian Islands to work on the sugar plantations.

Professor Moniz will demonstrate, perform, and explain the traditional Madeiran chordophone instruments and vocal arrangements, including the cultural relevance. Professor Moniz has his Masters in Music instruction, and currently instructing at the Conservatório Escola das Artes da Madeira.

A two hour interactive workshop for ukulele and other chordophone performers will be held the day before the performance on Saturday, May 2nd from 10am-12pm – all are invited to bring their instruments and participate.

Ashkenaz is all ages, all the time. Kids and minors are always welcome. Those 12 or under are admitted FREE (unless otherwise noted).
