The Event:
Gift of Jazz presents a special concert, Brass & Valor: Honoring Military Veterans of Jazz. This unique evening pays tribute to the service and musical contributions of veteran Colorado musicians while celebrating the legendary jazz figures who helped shape the genre.
6:30 – 7:00 PM | NextUp: CCJA Jazz Messengers
7:15 – 8:30 PM | Jonathan Powell Quartet
Throughout jazz history, iconic figures like John Coltrane, Bob Brookmeyer, Clark Terry, Dave Brubeck, James Moody, Mel Tormé, and James Reese Europe served in the military alongside their legendary music careers. Coming on the heels of Veterans Day, this evening pays tribute to that enduring legacy with a heartfelt musical salute bridging generations of service and artistry.
Jonathan Powell and the Band:
Leading the evening is acclaimed trumpeter and composer Jonathan Powell. Originally from Largo, Florida, Powell built a distinguished career over two decades in New York City, earning critical acclaim for an electrifying playing style that has drawn comparisons to jazz legends like Freddie Hubbard and Lee Morgan. A remarkably versatile artist, his career spans performances with Eddie Palmieri, Blood, Sweat & Tears, and Arturo O'Farrill's Grammy-winning Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra.
Now residing in Colorado, Powell has assembled an exceptional group of veteran local musicians—guitarist Wayne Wilkinson, bassist Jason Crowe, and drummer Tim Stombaugh—each of whom has also proudly served in the military. Together, they will bring this tribute full circle, honoring the pioneering jazz veterans who paved the way.
