Musical Style: Avant-Garde Jazz

SeaJun Kwon is a Denver-based composer and bassist, originally from Seoul, South Korea. Known for his innovative compositions, Kwon blends influences from prog rock, jazz, avant-garde, and contemporary classical traditions to create a unique and dynamic sound.

In 2019, Kwon founded the Walking Cliché Sextet, a group that explores the boundaries between structured composition and improvisational chaos. The ensemble released its debut album, Suite Chase Reflex, in 2021, followed by the critically acclaimed Micro-Nap in October 2022. Micro-Nap was lauded for its innovative fusion of genres and complex arrangements, with DownBeat Magazine describing it as offering "the consolation of order and human contact," and All About Jazz praising its "spiky, ever-changing musical stew with a raucous edge reminiscent of some of Henry Threadgill's music."

Kwon’s recent project, "Stridulation," incorporates the concept of stridulation—the act of producing sound through friction—as a metaphor for multi-genre mixing and sound creation. The project also explores themes of chaos and order, blending ambient textures, the complex rhythms and larger forms of prog rock, and the improvisational spirit of jazz.

Kwon has performed extensively in Japan, Korea, Chicago, Boston, Denver, and Los Angeles, including a standout appearance in the Just Jazz concert series in the summer of 2023. His work continues to push musical boundaries, combining intricate arrangements and spontaneous improvisation into a distinctive and evocative soundscape.
