For decades, the name Robert Johnson has been synonymous with vocal excellence in the Mile High City. A true Denver icon and a Colorado favorite, Johnson possesses a voice often described as “smooth-as-silk” — a rich, resonant instrument that moves effortlessly between the soulful depth of a baritone and the soaring clarity of a tenor. Whether he’s channeling the romanticism of the Great American Songbook or the rhythmic pulse of contemporary jazz, his delivery is consistently buttery, expressive, and undeniably world-class.

Johnson’s career is a masterclass in versatility and sustained brilliance. His professional CV reflects a legacy of critical acclaim, having been named Best Male Vocalist by the Denver Post and Best Jazz Vocalist by the Colorado Black Artists Association. From his historic, record-breaking run on Star Search ’89 to topping the Billboard Jazz charts with the group Dotsero, he has proven time and again that he belongs among the elite.

This performance offers a rare, intimate opportunity to witness Johnson at the height of his powers as he pays tribute to the legendary Johnny Hartman. Hartman was famously the only vocalist to record a full album with John Coltrane, and his velvet-toned legacy requires a singer of immense technical skill and emotional nuance. Johnson doesn’t just sing the notes; he captures the sophisticated, effortless elegance that defined a golden era of jazz. Don’t miss this chance to experience Colorado’s premier male singer as he brings the timeless magic of the Hartman songbook to life.

“[Johnson’s] resonant tenor sometimes swoops to lower ranges in a seemingly effortless delivery, both fluid and expressive.” —All About Jazz
