Passing the Crown is a powerful live orchestral mixtape and dance experience that celebrates the Queens of Hip-Hop. Premiered at Lincoln Center’s 2024 Summer for the City festival, this groundbreaking production blends cinematic orchestration, breaking, and street dance styles, all anchored by an all-female and gender-expansive collective of award-winning musicians, Olympic and world-renowned breakers, freestylers, DJs, and MCs.
Executive Produced and conceived by violinist and composer Juliette Jones, and creatively led by associate producer and violinist Monique Brooks Roberts and Emmy-award winning choreographer Randi “Rascal” Freitas, Passing the Crown reimagines the music of Hip-Hop’s pioneering women—honoring their contributions while pushing the culture forward. This immersive celebration of cultural legacy and creativity is powered by legendary streetwear designer April Walker’s The Future Been Female imprint, reflecting the artistry, resilience, and brilliance of women in Hip-Hop culture.
For this special performance at Levitt Pavilion Denver, we’re thrilled to welcome GRAMMY Award-winning artist Rapsody, whose signature lyricism and dynamic stage presence will elevate this electrifying celebration of Hip-Hop’s legacy and future. Additionally, we’re excited to feature Denver’s own DJ Cyn, She Who Won’t Be Named, and Osha Renee, further amplifying the incredible talent rooted in this vibrant city!
Passing the Crown is more than a performance—it’s a movement that honors legacy, uplifts community, and ignites the future. Join us for this history-making night of rhythm and royalty.
The crown isn’t just passed—it’s celebrated.
A master lyricist and truth-teller, Rapsody’s journey began with The Idea of Beautiful (2012) and quickly evolved with a standout guest verse on Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly (2015), which earned her a GRAMMY nomination. Her career soared with pivotal projects like Laila’s Wisdom (2017), which garnered two GRAMMY nods, and the groundbreaking tribute Eve (2019), celebrating Black women.
In 2020, Rapsody was named Lyricist of the Year at the BET Hip-Hop Awards and featured on EBONY’s Power 100 in 2021. Recognized by XXL as one of the 20 Greatest Female Rappers of All Time—and crowned by Dr. Dre as his “favorite female emcee”—she has continually pushed the boundaries of hip-hop storytelling.
Her latest album, Please Don’t Cry, marks a new chapter in her influential career. Blending raw vulnerability with technical prowess over 22 deeply personal tracks—and featuring collaborations with Erykah Badu, Lil Wayne, Phylicia Rashad, and Baby Tate—it offers an intimate look into Rapsody’s evolution. In 2024, her artistry reached a new pinnacle with her first GRAMMY win for “3:AM,” further cementing her status as one of hip-hop’s greatest storytellers.
Now, Rapsody joins Passing the Crown at Levitt Pavilion Denver for a special one-night-only performance, bringing her legendary stage presence to an unforgettable night of music, movement, and celebration.
