A documentary legend knew little about his subject’s music before capturing what would become the performer’s final appearance as a glam-rock alter ego—but he certainly knew a star when he saw one. Bathed in red spotlight and striking in scarlet hair, dark raccoon eyes, feathers, knee-highs, black mesh, and bangles, the subject is a shimmering, intergalactic Dietrich. The filmmaker keeps his focus on the stage, presenting a near-complete record of the show: mind-melting solos from the guitarist sideman and, not least, the main subject’s formidably bare thighs.
