Musical Style: World/Flamenco/Jazz Fusion
Miguel Espinoza Fusion, the award-winning World Music Jazz/Flamenco Fusion group here in Denver, joins forces with jazz flutist Joe Anderies in this celebration of the release of their fifth album, this time of their duo!
Miguel Espinoza Fusion Duo, the collective beating heart of world-class musicians Miguel Espinoza (guitar), and Dianne Betkowski (cello), invites the listener into a rich and colorful symposium of musical traditions. Firm roots in flamenco, classical, and jazz are woven through with North African rhythms, Celtic whimsy, and Brazilian expressions for an original sound that is transformative, vibrant, and deeply emotive.
Their third album, Living in a Daydream (2022), is recent winner of the Indie Acoustic Project’s Best Jazz album of 2022-2023, and features extensive collaborations with two-time Grammy winner Howard Levy. Their fourth album, Gabriella, again features the collaborative efforts of Howard Levy, as well as fellow two-time Grammy winner David Balakrishnan, of the Turtle Island Quartet.
Miguel Espinoza Fusion are the 2019 winners of Denver Westword Magazine’s Best of World Music, and their albums, Turtle Dreams and Veneta, have also won Indie Acoustic Project awards. Veneta ranks #9 of the Top 200 World Music Albums of 2022 and was #11 on the Top 20 2022 NACC World Charts for 16 weeks. Their third album, Living in a Daydream, has recently been #1 on the Top 50 RMR World Chart for both new albums as well as single tracks.
Described by Guitar Player Magazine as “mesmerizing”, Miguel Espinoza has recorded and performed with Bela Fleck, Kai Eckhardt, Kitaro, Tuck and Patti, Rita Moreno, and Ben Vareen, among many others.
Joe Anderies is a longtime Denver flutist, saxophonist, and music educator. Over the years, he has created innovative jazz education programs for students from elementary through high school. His vision of connecting jazz traditions with the next generation of musicians continues to flourish as he completes his sixth year on the board of the Colorado Conservatory for the Jazz Arts and his 24th year with the organization as a teacher and advisor.
Joe pursued his formal studies at Colorado Mesa University, the University of North Texas, Metropolitan State University of Denver, and the University of Colorado Boulder, where he earned his master’s degree in music. He has recorded and performed with renowned artists including Larry Coryell, Ron Miles, Chuck Lamb, Gabriel Santiago, Bennie Maupin, Rob Mullins, and Eric “Benny” Bloom.
His debut album of all-original music, Resonance, has earned worldwide acclaim as a powerful instrumental jazz release.
