JJ Slater travelled to Taos, New Mexico in 2022 to live in an artist community, though he was later described by the others as an “enigma”. Leaving before dawn to hike desert mountains or prune Juniper trees before returning for hours-long siestas, he holed up in his casita and wrote “The Silver Key”, an album about an artist similarly hiding from life and its expectations, in a rural motel where they’d spent their childhood summers. Fully realized, the song cycle marries sinewy blues guitar, sensual backwoods crooning, and slick, bouncing grooves. He is currently touring the album, playing it front-to-back, live in 2025.
