The fourth installment of 8 Ball Radio's bi-monthly live series at The Kite features three acts from different corners of NYC's underground music communities.
Known by many as the heartthrob of the Bedford Avenue station in Williamsburg, Malang Jobarteh is a world-renowned Kora player and singer. A Gambian/Senegalese musician, Malang's music extends the legacy of the West-African Jali/ Griot tradition of oral storytelling into the halls of New York City's subways, where he has been playing for over 10 years. Soulful, serene, masterfully crafted, and full of life, Malang's performances - above or below ground - are a light to this world.
Big Naut is a single musical unit composed of three individual noisemakers. Lead by Q, the trio takes influences from noise, jazz fusion, drum and bass, and more and mixes them into a new stew that reeks of dark omens, anti-imperialist rage, and lemon kush.
wahala.wav is a DJ, music-maker, and co-founder of the NYC collective SLICK DOWN - a collective, label, event series, and educational hub that pours into and platforms marginalized voices in NYC's underground electronic music community. His practice melds euphoric dance floor sensibilities with a deep connection to the historical and cultural landscapes of Black music. A resident on 8 Ball Radio, wahala.wav explores rich sonic territories, channeling a distinct personal voice while honoring the expansive lineage that shapes his musical perspective. He has been a guest performer with The Lot Radio, Balamii, and more.
8 Ball Radio is a volunteer-run, public-access online radio station based in Chinatown. Focused on community-oriented programming, the station places an emphasis on freedom and collaboration without hierarchical structures. It serves as a part of 8 Ball Community, a nonprofit collective that also engages in other cultural projects.
