Trombonist Charlie Halloran is a ubiquitous presence in New Orleans, seamlessly blending into the city's vibrant music scene. As a mainstay of the Crescent City’s traditional jazz culture and the energetic Frenchmen Street circuit, Charlie leads his 1960s-inspired Caribbean lounge band, The Tropicales, regularly performing at venues like Zony Mash, The Spotted Cat, and DBA. His extensive discography includes notable contributions to Jon Cleary's Grammy-winning Go-Go Juice and its follow-up Dynamite, as well as Maria Muldaur’s Grammy-nominated Don’t You Feel My Leg. Charlie has released five albums as a bandleader and has collaborated with a who's who of artists, including the Squirrel Nut Zippers, John Boutte, Rickie Lee Jones, U2, Meschiya Lake and the Little Big Horns, the Panorama Jazz Band, the Shotgun Jazz Band, the Palmetto Bug Stompers, Pokey LaFarge, Luke Winslow King, Alex McMurray, and many more. His unmistakable trombone sound has even graced the soundtracks of hit TV shows like NCIS New Orleans and Treme, as well as various films and television productions filmed in New Orleans.
Twice named a rising star by DownBeat Magazine and frequently recognized as one of New Orleans’ top trombonists by OffBeat Magazine, Charlie performs regularly with groups such as Meschiya Lake and the Little Big Horns, the Palmetto Bug Stompers, the Panorama Jazz Band, and the Shotgun Jazz Band. Yet, you might also catch him playing at the Palm Court Café with Tuba Skinny, the Preservation Hall Allstars, or occasionally alongside Jon Cleary or Anders Osborne.
In 2023, The Tropicales released Presents for Everyone, a festive Christmas album on candy cane-colored vinyl through Nutone Recordings. The previous year saw the official release of two albums: The Alcoa Sessions (ArtistShare) and Shake the Rum (Hi-Tide Recordings). Combining traditional New Orleans jazz with 1950s R&B, French Caribbean beguine, Trinidadian calypso, and even Venezuelan waltzes, Charlie's music has garnered rave reviews and significant radio play across the Americas, Europe, and Australia. The Alcoa Sessions brings together 18 musicians from the USA, Trinidad, Martinique, and Cuba, imagining the musical experience of a 1950s cruise from New Orleans to the Caribbean. Shake the Rum offers a collection of mostly instrumental numbers inspired by 1950s and 60s Caribbean dance bands, released on vibrant pink vinyl. The album’s pre-release was named one of the top 50 Louisiana albums of 2021 by OffBeat Magazine.
Charlie's 2016 album Charlie Halloran and the Quality 6 earned a nomination for Best Traditional Jazz CD from OffBeat Magazine, and was ranked among the top 50 Louisiana recordings that same year. His follow-up, Ce Biguine, features music from the French Antilles recorded directly onto 78rpm acetate discs. Caribbean Beat magazine praised the album for its nostalgic ambiance, with music that beckons listeners to dance under tropical skies.
A key member of the platinum-selling Squirrel Nut Zippers since 2009, Charlie has toured extensively across the USA and South America. However, he is often found gracing the stages of local festivals like French Quarter Fest and Jazz Fest, where he regularly performs on the traditional jazz stages. His career has also seen him perform with legends like Allen Toussaint, the O'Jays, and indie rock acts such as Calexico and The Walkmen.
When not playing his trombone, Charlie can be found enjoying a well-made margarita with salt and fresh limes (no sour mix allowed) or a classic Mai Tai. His deep passion for vintage calypso music and mid-century modern design are integral parts of his unique artistic identity.
Heather Pierson is a New Hampshire–based singer-songwriter, pianist, song leader, and performer with a passion for cultivating joy—both onstage and off. With a toe in each of the realms of New Orleans jazz, blues, vocal chants, instrumental piano, and folk, her multi-genre songwriting places her firmly in a category all her own—one honed by decades of diligent practice and curious exploration.
Whether performing solo, as a duo, with her trio, or in a community sing, Heather’s live shows feature an effortless command of the piano and a bell-tone voice that Americana Highways describes as “sounding like timeless wind moving slowly through the trees.” Each offering she brings to the stage is infused with happiness, honest self-reflection, and a genuine desire to connect and share from the heart.
Over nearly 25 years on her own record label, Vessel Recordings, she has released sixteen albums and several singles of original music, including her most recent: Back To The Light. Her most vibrant release yet, Back To The Light was recorded live on the floor at Acadia Recording Company in Portland, Maine, with her trio mates Shawn Nadeau on bass and Craig Bryan on drums and percussion. Released in September 2024, the album pulses with the grooves of New Orleans, the beauty of Appalachia, and the spirit of Sunday-go-to-meeting celebration.
